Dr. Adam moved to Yellowknife in March 1980 from Sheffield, England. He obtained his Dental Degree from the University of Sheffield in 1978. After a brief period in General Practice in England, Dr. Adam decided to immigrate to North America with his wife Charlene. A year long adventure proved to be a life long passion and they put down permanent roots in Yellowknife.
Due to the poor dental services in Yellowknife, many went south for their dental care. In 1982, Dr. Adam and a fellow dentist decided to open the Cameron Dental Clinic. It was the first time the north had an up to date modern dental clinic. The clinic became very successful and in 1987, Dr. Adam and his fellow dentist decided to open their own dental clinics to pursue their own specific interests. The Filewych family home on Franklin Avenue was lovingly and meticulously renovated by Dr. Adam and to this day is still the present site of the Adam Dental Clinic.
In 1981, Dr Adam became the first dentist in the Northwest Territories to obtain the National Dental Examining Board of Canada Certification. He has continued to pursue further dental qualifications obtaining:
- Fellowship of the Academy of General Dentistry
- Accreditation of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
- Fellowship of the International College of Dentists
- Fellowship of the Academy Dentofacial Esthetics
- Graduate of the Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dental Studies
He continues to attend dental seminars all over North America averaging 90 hours of education per year.
Dr. Adam has and continues to participate in many volunteer organizations for the benefit of the north. These have included St. John’s Ambulance for almost 10 years, the Stanton Hospital Foundation for which he was one of the founding members, and the Northwest Dental Association serving as President for three separate terms. Dr. Adam was also the lay member on the Board of Governors of the Law Society of the Northwest Territories and the Certified General Accountants of the NWT. He continues to sit on various committees at the Stanton Regional Hospital and the NWT/Nunavut Dental Association.
For over two decades, Yellowknife has been home to the Adam family and each of their four children who were born here. Dr. Adam enjoys golfing, boating, gardening, and snowmobiling with his family in the winter. He continues to enjoy the practice of Dentistry and the wonderful people of Yellowknife. The Adam Dental Clinic is also blessed with a wonderful and hard working staff who have made the clinic the very personable and professional establishment it is.
